Outdoor adventure education is one of the most popular forms of experiential education because it takes learning well beyond traditional classrooms and provides a place to problem-solve with instant feedback. Challenges such as ropes courses, climbing adventures, hiking, navigation and more are all examples of wilderness programs that allow students to work their way through problems in a physical, hands-on way.

Programs range from day-long team-building adventures to summer camps and long-term residential programs. While many adventure and wilderness programs are physical, a strong emphasis is placed on overcoming fears, embracing teamwork and reflecting on personal growth after a challenge is completed. Lessons reach beyond simply completing an outdoor challenge to applying new mental and emotional skills to everyday problems when students return daily life back at home.
