Since 2006, Open Sky Wilderness Therapy has been providing the premier family-centered wilderness therapy experience through its programs in the mountains of Southwest Colorado and Canyonlands of Southeast Utah. The Open Sky approach transcends traditional wilderness therapy by emphasizing treatment for the whole family, not just the adolescent or young adult, and the application of evidence-based clinical modalities with innovative, well-researched holistic healing practices such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness. When a family partners with Open Sky, they embark on a rewarding adventure of self-discovery and learn a range of strategies that promote lasting success.

Open Sky works with male and female adolescents, ages 14-17, and male and female young adults, ages 18-30. Our clinicians effectively treat a variety of behavioral and emotional issues. The average group size at Open Sky is seven, to provide for a higher level of individualized care.

Open Sky’s holistic wilderness program engages the transformational power of nature to strengthen relationships, foster growth, cultivate awareness, and develop overall health and wellness. Our unique approach combines traditional therapeutic approaches, innovative substance abuse treatment, whole foods nutrition, and healthy overall living for all of our students. Our programming is designed around developing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Students participate in yoga and meditation on a daily basis. Other opportunities for spiritual growth include ceremonies, solos, sweat lodges and vision quests.

Our therapy utilizes the most current, proven methods for healing. Our clinical therapists all have Master’s or Doctorate degrees, with significant educational and professional history specializing in the treatment of adolescents and families. Open Sky therapists are trained in the most current and research-proven methods including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Motivational Interviewing, and Gottman’s Marital Therapy. Each therapist attends professional conferences and trainings throughout the country to keep apprised of the latest treatment methods and evidence-based practices.

The comprehensive programming provided by our Family Services team supports Open Sky’s family systems approach. This is the centerpiece of the Open Sky experience and is integral to a student’s success. Families participate in weekly therapeutic phone calls, weekly conference-call support groups, interactive webinar presentations, parent Wellness Weekends and a field-based family reunion and graduation process at the conclusion of the program. We also offer Enhanced Family Services, such as Family Quests, Parent Coaching, and tools such Genograms and Family Assessments. Our customized Family Quests are wilderness therapy intensives for the student and family together. The Family Quest supports and actualizes the parallel growth experienced by individual students and their families.

Open Sky’s research staff guide outcomes studies on the effectiveness of our program. We employ empirically validated research instruments to measure the success of our program, and the results prove that it works.
